Gameplay (work in progress)
I've always had a soft spot for SNES-era platformers, particularly Super Mario World. This ongoing personal project is an opportunity to indulge that nostalgia and my passion for game development, creating a 2D pixel-art platformer starring a tree frog in a jungle threatened by deforestation.
I'm developing the game in Godot, designing and programming the gameplay alongside creating the pixel art, animations, music and sound effects.
I've taken a modular approach to development, creating a component-based system using small, reusable scenes with scripts. This allows me to experiment with new gameplay mechanics while keeping the underlying systems flexible and extensible.
I've particularly enjoyed exploring pixel art and character animation, working in a completely different visual medium from my usual professional work.
For the music and sound effects, I've been experimenting with physical synthesisers, Logic Pro and chipsynth SFC, using the latter to emulate the sample compression and distinctive audio artefacts of the SNES sound chip.
